Mortal Love…

“Now I walk with shadows, befriended by darkness to share these brief moments. For we my love display both sides of life’s shell. Here we meet, life with death, separated only by the warmth of mortal flesh. I can sense your smile, feel you in my arms, it comforts me. I’m decided, until I can join you this will be my life. The candle flickers and the wax falls, the very light that brings you to my eyes betrays us. But I fear not of sin for this union between our worlds.” 2014

metaphysical bridge:  the skull.

sketchbook pageThe most powerful motif of all, the essence of physical mortality. Our fleeting human existence, a union with the ancestors,  a vessel in which the psyche breathes its air.

An ‘event horizon’ a membrane of calcium which divides the self from the other. Inside we are, outside is everything else. It represents both a mortal shelter for the fragile mind while on the outside a castle, a fortress against an ever invading world.
But beside that, a blessed portal, a familiar object. A home to memories and those we loved and lost. Embrace the skull of the lost,  to feel a connection  if only in fleeting dreams. For a heart that will not be parted by death…a few moments of loving reunion.
But would such a liaison  go unpunished?   Under the cover of darkness, can love be reunited, a flickering candle transcend the  mortal parting, give familiar form?
There talk, confide, whisper love to a partner’s skull. How long the illusion, the hopeless pretence,…moments, minutes, until the realisation of the dawn of truth? But this is her tragedy, the trapped life, the shackle of love time has stopped…awaiting love in the realm beyond this mortality.
